How To Choose Male Voice Over Talents

By Lila Bryant

People use voiceovers for many different types of production. Usually when people think of the term they think of advertising but equally they could be used to narrate documentaries, audio books and so forth. Sometimes there will be the need specifically for male voice over talents and therefore you need to be sure you have the right one.

There is a wide array of projects that can use vocal talents. Commercials on film, television and radio all often use narration in order to get people listening to what the product is and what it has to offer. In the case of radio the vocal is obviously vital as this is often the only way of delivering the message of the commercial.

Before contacting independent artists or agencies you need to consider what kind of vocal tone would be appropriate to your particular project. For example if you are promoting the latest animated series you might want someone with a deep voice who can command the attention of the listener or alternatively someone hyped up who sweeps up the listener with their passion for what is about to come on.

This then helps you to narrow down the options. Some artists are versatile and can achieve a wide range of vocals. Indeed this is especially useful when recording animated projects which require a wide range of characters but may not necessarily have the budget to provide actors for every individual character.

Once you know what you want it becomes easier to write a brief clearly indicating the kind of voice you are looking for. You may choose to approach an independent artist via their own website or social media page. Alternatively you may decide to approach an agency and ask them to choose one of their clients who will be best suited to your brief.

Another vital aspect is the demo. This is your opportunity to hear how they sound and whether it is appropriate for your particular brief. Someone may have a terrific booming voice but if you want something a bit softer and sensitive then this will be largely irrelevant.

In either instance you need to get an audio sample from them. This gives you the chance to listen to their vocal range and whether what they can offer will work for your project. If they are recording from their own studio this becomes especially important as it gives you the opportunity to test the sound quality of their equipment as well. This is vital because ultimately you will be the one judged on the final quality of a project and any poor recording will reflect badly on you whereas choosing someone professional with good quality recording equipment will reflect well.

Some voice over artists will work independently while others will work through an agency. In either case you need to ensure that they understand what you want. Furthermore it is best to contact as wide a variety of talents as possible in order to compare what they have to offer and who is the most appropriate for your personal requirements. For more information, feedback from previous clients and to contact independent artists and agencies use your regular search engine.
