Guide To The Drum Machine: Free Beats Tutorial

By Delroy Wilkins

Today's drum machine is distinctly different from its traditional counterpart that was available several years ago. The difference lies mainly in the advanced features and options provided by the modern drum machine. Understanding about these features will help you identify and buy the right drum machine for your music production needs.

Sampler: Samplers are now a basic part of the drum machine. A sampler allows you to play back any sound that you have uploaded onto the machine. This is a very important feature because it gives the producer many more options as compared to the stock audio options that come with the drum machine when it is purchased. This feature also has the ability to increase the durability and life span of the drum machine. As a producer, you can get samples of these sounds from many sources such as third party sound producers, sampling audios from other songs as well as creating your own sounds.

Sample Chopping: With the first generation of drum machines, their memory capacity was such that it only allowed for drum sounds to be stored, however, current generations of the drum machine allow for other instrument samples to be stored as well. Sample chopping is a feature that allows a producer to take a part of a song, and break it down into even smaller parts. The smaller parts can then be placed onto one pad on the drum machine. The producer is then free to rearrange these sounds to create a new sound or song. What is even more important about this feature is that it is no longer limited to drum beats only, but can also be used with other samples of audio.

Majority of modern drum machines come with the sequencer feature. The sequencer feature enables you to produce sounds from different types of instruments. The instruments can either be in software or hardware form. This feature allows you to bring created sounds together resulting in harmonic sounds. This feature isn't found in all drum machines. This is especially so for drum machines found in different software since these for part of a larger sequencing system. Native Instrument's drum machine is a good example of drum machine that comes with the sequencer feature. This machine is capable of creating different sounds from different instruments.

Step sequencer: This is a feature that allows a producer to create a beat without having to record in real-time. This is a tool that is useful for producers that don't have the time to produce rhythmic chops.
