Encouraging Your Child To Read Science Fiction Books For Teens

By Maryanne Goff

These days the internet is a veritable explosion of information. Among that information are countless numbers of books that can be bought on a variety of formats. Any parent that appreciates the value of reading will want their child to read. If they like sci-fi, then science fiction books for teens are what you'll be after.

The reason it's key to get children to read is because the ones that do are normally more intelligent than ones that do not. And the good news is that it's not too late to boost their intellect and get them reading. Parents only need to give them a little nudge in the right direction and hopefully the child's curiosity will do the rest.

Kids that read from a young age rarely need encouragement to pick up a book. However, those that are reluctant to do so might well find themselves falling behind classmates, and they may not be as eloquent as their peers. These days, even the most rebellious teenager can start reading right away if encouraged. There are many devices on the market that act as readers, so there's no need for physical books. And finding these books is easy because teenagers are well catered for.

Try stoking your child's imagination. If you want them to get into the science-fiction genre, then try watching things about space and about astronauts and getting them interested in life on other planets. Perhaps you could take them to see movies that touch on this, or else purchase a graphic novel. Remember also that superhero movies and comics often touch upon the same subjects as sci-fi novels.

The library is a fun place to take them because there is a separate section devoted just for teenagers. Here they'll find many different titles. Perhaps they should forgo the tendency to pick the largest novel they can find and pick books that are much shorter. Many of them can be read in just a few hours, which could be more fulfilling than a really long book. If it's impractical to get to the library, then go online. You'll discover a plethora of titles aimed at the teenage market.

If you're after quality and not quantity, try scouring the best seller lists on specialists websites. Most sites will have generic best seller lists but the better ones should also have specific lists, tailored toward niche markets. If you look closely at books aimed at their age group you should find something in there to interest him. Also look out for free novels, as the quality of these can be very good. Conversely, sometimes the quality is poor, with typos and grammatical errors.

It's often recommended you stick with one writer once you've found a novel from them you like. This is because reading is a vast investment of time and it's more likely you'll like a writer's other works if you like one. Teenagers might also be more likely to keep reading if they have novels from writers they know.

Science Fiction Books For Teens are pretty easy to find, but finding the right author and right stories is sometimes more of a challenge. Find out if they like adventure tales, hard sci-fi, time-travel or dystopian fiction. The more they read the more they will use their imagination and hopefully get more creative in other pursuits.
