The origin of the Christmas tree

By Mark Evans

Ever wondered the reason some of us have real Christmas trees inside of our households at Christmas? This story began years back well before the introduction of Christianity. Evergreen vegetation were a extraordinary image for people in winter season, in quite a few countries many people thought the trees would chase away evil spirits and also sickness. This is the reason people strung twigs of what we know in modern times as being the real Christmas tree above the doors and window frames to their properties.

The wintertime solstice was celebrated on the shortest day of the year by folks in the North hemisphere. This was because people worshiped the sun to be a god and throughout the winter they thought he was hurt. The biggest night-time and smallest day time symbolised a starting point from which the sun would begin to cure. All of the evergreen trees were a reminder to the individuals that all life would grow once more once the sun god was healed.

They are not the only civilizations to worship the sun like a god, numerous past societies that include Celts, Vikings, Romans as well as the ancient Egyptians worshiped the solstice in a similar fashion. Egyptians put up green palms into their dwelling while Romans furnished their houses with evergreen boughs. They considered the evergreen vegetation as a sign of everlasting life.

During the Sixteenth century German Christians began to take real decorated Christmas trees in to their buildings. That is regarded as the true starting of the Christmas tree practice. Numerous people added illuminated wax lights to the tree which is thought to have been started by Martin Luther a Protestant reformer in the 16th century. All of the candle lights were viewed to stand for the stars of the night sky.

The traditions of Christmas trees were spread by German settlers around the remainder of European countries and even America. In 1846, Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert (who was German) were displayed in the London News surrounding a Christmas tree. The royalty was really popular and as a consequence Christmas trees very quickly grew to become fashionable.
