Magic is a type of performing art. It is used primarily to entertain an audience through the staging of a magic trick or creation of illusions that seem to be supernatural or impossible. The person who performs this kind of trick may be called an illusionist or a magician. Some of these individuals are named after the type of effects they produce. For instance: escape artists, mentalists, prestidigitators, and conjurors.

Learning and performing tricks requires creativity and confidence. Regular practice is required in order to make the act secretive and seamless. Most professional magicians do not share their knowledge with individuals who are outside of the profession in an effort to keep their secrets untold. People interested in learning the craft may opt to join magic clubs. This is where inexperienced and seasoned magicians work together on their technique.

There are a variety of performances that can be done: stage illusions, platform, mentalism, escapology, micromagic, online, theatrical seances, children, street, gospel, bizarre, mathemagic, corporate, shock and more. Likewise, many tricks that can be learned. They range in their difficulty from extremely easy to very difficult.

Sometimes these tricks are called effects. Numerous effects are possible. In fact, a short routine done by a professional in this field may include several effects. These tricks are categorized as: close-up effects, levitations, stage illusions and mentalism. Some require certain utilities or accessories in order to work.

These acts are known to be a great source of entertainment for many people. Because of this, many illusionists are part of carnival acts or work as street performers, who make their living by doing short performances in front of small audiences. Many magicians get their start as part of an apprenticeship where they learn from a more experienced illusionist.

Many sources are available for people who are interested in learning this craft. Most online sources are free of charge and offer text, video and pictures of how to do specific tricks. There are even books that can be purchased that give lessons. Classes and clubs may be most helpful for tactile learners. One of the most effective ways to truly learn the art is through steady practice. Perform in front of family and friends until the trick is mastered and then move on to strangers.

For many, a magic trick is entertaining. It may be complex or simple in nature, require accessories or absolutely nothing, or be done by a hobbyist or professional. No matter the situation, the secretive craft is based around illusion. Various offline and online sources are available to those who have interest in learning how to prosper at this craft.
