Undyed Yarn For Crafts Or Knitting

By Chasity Sheppard

Craft makers and knitters alike all know that undyed yarn is a great way to express your individuality when you are busy crafting. Buying these uncolored skeins and coloring them the way you want allows you to be more creative and go beyond the standard colors offered in craft stores. You get exactly what you want instead of being forced to only choose from what is readily available.

There are some good, everyday yarns that are just waiting to be dyed for your use. These come in a variety of different names, including Everyday, Basic, Superwash, and more. No matter what name they go under, these skeins are great for making clothes and other items that will get heavy, everyday use because they are very strong and made from durable materials. Some of these are natural fibers, while others are man-made.

Wool is another popular everyday material that easily takes whatever color you may want to use on it. It is prized by knitters because it is thick, which allows it to keep you warm should you decide to make a sweater out of it. It is also good for socks or gloves, since these body parts get particularly cold in winter.

Alpaca is another type of material that literally comes from the shaved fur of an alpaca animal. It can be divided into two different types--regular and baby alpaca. Each one is very soft, with an almost silky feel that considered to be a luxury material. It takes dye very well, so buying it undyed allows you to make any color you like.

Speaking of silk, this highly-prized natural fiber is another great type of yarn that people love because of its softness and feel. It can be bought in its natural form and dyed later, though it looks great natural as well. Silk comes in several thicknesses, allowing you to choose which one is right for your project. It's especially popular for making clothing since it feels so great and luxurious against the skin.

There are also blended skeins that combine at least two, but sometimes more, type of fiber into one. A great example is a silk and wool blend, which is usually made to allow crafters the opportunity get a yarn that is both soft and durable. The wool provides the durability because of its thickness, while the silk provides the softness to make one really great and popular yarn.

Once you choose which material or blend to use, it is time to decide what color to use. Though you can certainly leave the yarn uncolored, it is fun to choose a color or colors to dye it. You can even blend more than one color to make a brand new hue that is yours and yours alone. You can dye it at home, though there are plenty of professionals that will be happy to do it for you.

No matter what you want to use it for, undyed yarn is a great way to make a customized craft item. You can use them to knit sweaters or other clothing, which makes a great gift. These gifts show the recipient that you care enough to take time out to make them a present, creating lasting memories.
