A Different Kind Of Auction Fundraiser

By Angel Dudley

Talk about an auction fundraiser and the image of a yard full of items, an auctioneer calling out for bids and a gavel that he will hammer down every time an item is sold to the highest bidder rush to mind. Yet there is another way things are being auctioned off and that is through silent auctions. This is the way many charities and organizations are now going when they are holding fund-raising events.

The way silent auctions work is that things are done silently as the term implies. This is because the auctioneer is replaced by slips of paper on which prospective buyers put down their bids for the items they are interested in. They also note down their names so that the auctioneer will know who was won the bid for an item at the end of an auction.

People then look at the items, choose what they would most like to have and place their bids for items of their choice on a piece of paper. Anyone interested in the same item checks the bid indicated on the paper and puts down a higher bid in the hope of winning the bid.

Technology has touched every part of life and that includes how auctions are done. There are thus silent online auctions. Here, things are done on the internet. There are auctioneers who will periodically show their wares on the net. The way bidding is done online is that people log on to these sites and will view the items available and see which bids have been placed on each item.

Thankfully, there is another way to have auctions done and that is through silent auctions. Rather than be done with an auctioneer calling out for bids, prospective buyers instead write down their bids on slips of paper along with their names. Those who are interested in an item refer to these slips refer to these slips to see what the highest bid is so that they can see which amount to bid for in order to win the bid.

There is no limit to the kind of items that can be put up during silent auctions such as themed gift baskets, luxury items, artwork, home decor and improvement items, recreation and entertainment items are some of the items that can be auctioned off.

For a complete list of online silent auctions, use one of the leading search engines and you will get a complete list of them. When bidding over the internet, keep in mind that you will need to face costs of transportation so take a look at where the items you are bidding for are. This is especially important for larger items like cars and machinery. If the price is really good though and the item is in really good condition, it may be worth it to go for it.

Be careful about how you dispatch payment for auction fundraiser items as well. The web has opened up countless opportunities but it has also made way for less than honest people. It is very easy for anyone located anywhere to set up a silent auction website, invite bids and ask for payment, perhaps with the promise of having them delivered for an additional cost. Payment will be requested online. If you are bidding on a well-known site, then you can do so but for little known sites, ask if you can pay as you collect the item.
