Enjoy The Funniest African Comedy Movies

By Cecile Ingram

There are a lot of very funny African comedy movies. No Surrender is about an ex-soldier who will go to any lengths in order to stop misdemeanours. However, because most people are scared of him, he gets away with his own bad conduct. After his younger brother dies, he marries the widow against her will. Then he tries to make her into a good wife. The film stars Nkem Owoh.

Return Of Aki & Popo Sisters stars Osita Iheme and Chinedu Ekedieze. This is about Erente who uses his special powers to protect himself and others in his village. Aki and Popo want to build a good relationship with him but do not know how to without creating mayhem. A sequel was also made to this film.

Suicide Bombers is a very popular film starring Charles Awurum, Charles Inojia and Victor Osuagwu. It shows how far people will go to get away from poverty. A sequel was made, using the same actors and then there was a related film titled Lost Bomb. Many people believe them to be among the finest comedies ever produced in Africa.

A bus driver named Ishmael is the central character in Crime Crisis. He thinks that Nigeria is in decline and the only way it can be reversed is if things change. Instead of changing the country however, he uses most of his energy fighting with his passengers who have dumped garbage in the street. Eventually he is jailed for fighting with police officers who he believes were not doing their jobs properly.

Akiki is the central character in Holy Life. He's extraordinarily choosy when it comes to women. He always rejects the ones he meets. He tricks his younger brother into lending him money by saying it is to pay for his wedding. However, Akiki has no intentions of getting married. Soon, his brother elopes which makes Akiki angry because he is the eldest and is supposed to marry first. A family feud takes place.

Old Fools stars Nkem Owoh. It's the tale of a family who fight each other because one faction will not compromise with the other. Some some secrets are revealed however, and this results in one group gaining the upper hand. It was marketed as a must see comedy. They made a sequel to it as well.

In Village Rascals, Popo and Aki are always getting into mischief. However, one day they go too far when they steal a masque from a shrine and sell it to tourists, living a life of luxury with the proceeds. However, the masque has been protecting the village for hundreds of years and the gods seek vengeance on the tourists who bought it.

Another favorite of the African comedy movies is Shattered Mirror. This is about a man who receives foul mouthed abuse from his father because he is unemployed. Eventually, poverty and a lack of prospects push him into a deep depression. As a result, he joins a secret cult. In the end, his father's dream becomes a reality but at a far higher price than he ever imagined.
