Satellite Television Comparison - Is Directv Or Dish Network The Best?

By Brian Stevens

When you initially take a look at Dish Network and DirecTV, the two satellite TV providers appear basically identical. However when you take a second look you will find that there are significant differences. Here is what they are..

Program Options

DIRECTV offers 265 satellite TV channels, while DISH Network offers 320 channels. Dish Network has 320 channels, DirecTV has 265 television channels. The satellite TV channels from both companies offer a selection of categories which includes movies, news, sports, variety shows, network broadcasts, weather, reality programs, special interest programs as well as foreign programming.

DIRECTV prices start at $29.99 per month for 150 channels, which includes local channels - ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, together with the CW channel. Program prices for Dish Network start at $24.95 for 190 channels including your local television channels including NBC, CBS, FOX, plus ABC.

Movie Channels

Both Dish Network and DirecTV offer a total of 31 movie channels including Starz, Cinemax, Showtime, and HBO. Movie channel costs start at $13 a month for Showtime, Cinemax, and Starz, and $16 for HBO.

Streaming Video Service

Streaming videos are the latest technological advance in satellite TV programming. With streaming video service you can watch movies and TV shows on your TV, your computer, your cell phone, and your laptop. Dish Network offers access to more than 25,000 streaming videos, while DirecTV offers more than 10,000 streaming video.

DIRECTV and DISH Network Pay-Per-View Features

Pay-per-view service will let you view the latest motion pictures while in the comfort of your home without having to go to a video store to rent them. DIRECTV features 60 motion pictures a month, plus sports plus special events, with prices beginning at $3.99 for each movie. DISH Network features 75 motion pictures per month, as well as sporting activities plus special events, with prices beginning at $3.99 per movie.

DIRECTV And DISH Network Music Service

With DIRECTV you will get 9 Sonic Tap music channels along with 56 XM satellite radio channels. With DISH Network you will get 64 SiriusXM satellite radio channels in addition to 52 music channels. Each provider's music stations are commercial free and they are broadcast in digital audio for CD quality sound.

DIRECTV and DISH Network Equipment Features

DIRECTV offers a free satellite television system in as many as 4 rooms of your home along with free installation of that system whenever you buy their service, while DISH Network offers a totally free satellite system installed in as many as 6 rooms of your home after you order their service. The two companies give you the choice of upgrading your receivers to an HD receiver for high-def reception, a DVR receiver so that you can record your TV shows, or a HD/DVR receiver for the best of both worlds.

Customer Care

Both DIRECTV and DIRECTV offer you free customer service by phone, email, and Internet chat service round the clock 7 days a week, so you can get support when you need it.

Conclusion

With regards to equipment, DIRECTV and DISH Network's dishes and receivers are the same in quality and design. However, I've found DISH Network's remote control and their program guide to be more convenient to use than DIRECTV's.

So far as the programs offered by the two providers, Dish Network provides the most channels, the most variety, the most music stations, plus the most pay-per-view movies and events. DIRECTV gives you the most sports broadcasts which includes the ever popular NFL Sunday Ticket.

DIRECTV has got 160 HD channels, while DISH Network features 200 hi-def channels.

If you want the best variety, the most high-def programming, along with the most pay-per-view movies and events at the cheapest price, then DISH Network will be the smartest choice. If you want to get the most sports channels, which includes NFL Sunday Ticket, then I recommend choosing DIRECTV.
