Announcing Your Engagement To The Public

By Stephanie Wales

Wedding is one of the ceremonies that is rooted in tradition. However, this fact isn't always a guarantee that bridal couples will be completely aware of all the practices that are observed before, during and after the wedding ceremony. This happens when the the bride and the groom don't share the same culture, nationality, or religion. But of course this isn't an excuse for them to not know at least the most significant wedding practices.

One important wedding etiquette that bridal couples shouldn't miss doing is the public announcement of their engagement. After informing the parents of the engaged couple and getting their approval, the next thing to do is to inform everyone they know about this news. This is usually done by publishing it on newspaper. Other options that engaged couples have today include sending the announcement through email or by organizing an engagement party.

When the bridal couple goes for the traditional way, they should call the newspaper's feature or society editor to ask the right time to do it. Newspaper editors accept notifications three to six months before the wedding day.

Traditionally, the bride's parents are the ones in charge of the public announcement. The information that this kind of announcement carries includes the names of the parents and of the bridal couples', as well as their permanent addresses, and the date of the wedding.

Engaged couples may also choose to have their engagement portrait printed below the announcement. Engagement portraits used to show only a picture of the bride. But modern practices allows for the bride and the groom to be photographed together for their engagement portrait.

Obviously, bridal couples need the help of a professional photographer who specializes in wedding photography or more specifically, bridal photography. These types of wedding photographers are already familiar of the requirements for capturing engagement portraits. Thus, couples can be guaranteed that they will make the right pose for their engagement portrait or get the kind of photography style that is right for their personality.
