What Are The Different Guitar Categories?

By Jack Wogan

Any significant moment of our lives is accompanied by music. Music makes our lives better. But music would not exist without instruments. Among the multitude of instruments, guitar remains one of the most popular. It has been used from ancient times to raise the spirit of people and it still continues to do so. In this article you will find out what the basic types of guitar are as well as their main basic functions.

Classical guitar

Most people believe that this guitar type is used mainly to play classical music. However, this is not true. This instrument features six strings and can be used to play a range of styles such as folk, jazz or flamenco. For the beginners this type of guitar is perfect. Its costs are not that high and you can play many songs with it until your technique improves. You will be able to recognize it very fast because of its wide neck and hollow body.

Acoustic guitar

Very highly regarded for their beautiful sound, acoustic guitars are made by a series of famous producers (Yamaha, Fender or Takamine) from different types of wood such as mahogany, alder or basswood. There are no external devices mounted on this instrument because its sound is produced in the body. However, the sound can be enhanced with the help of a device dubbed pickup. This device is normally placed under the bridge saddle of the instrument itself.

Electric guitar

One of the greatest assets to pop and rock music, the electric guitar is widely used. Its sound is amplified by electronics, which sit on the body of the guitar. The instrument functions on the basis of the direct electromagnetic induction principle. The sound is loud enough only if amplified by a loudspeaker.

To enhance the sound of this instrument you would have to connect it to an amplifier. For the creation of extra effects, you can purchase a guitar effects pedal. This device can be found in online as well as brick and mortar stores at reasonable prices. Make sure you plug it between the electrical guitar and the amplifier.

Bass guitar

Mainly played with the fingers or thumb, the bass guitar is very similar to the electric guitar. Its distinctive features are the neck, which is longer than that of the electric guitar. Musicians use this instrument to create a rhythmic background or better said to keep the 'beat' of the song. The number of strings attached to this guitar is four. Nonetheless, there are bass guitars which feature five or six strings as well.

Along with the piano and violin, guitar remains one of the most classical instruments. People love this instrument because they can learn to play it really fast. So, why not do the same yourself? You will be able to cheer up by singing your favorite song every time you feel sad. All it takes is a little practice and a lot of patience.
