What Is New Media In Art?

By Jennifer Marie Anderson

"New media" is easily one of the most important terms that can be associated with art. The term in question is one that's associated with various platforms, each of them with some kind of digital emphasis. As a result, it's easy to imagine how they can be connected to different types of art. If you're someone who's curious as to what new media actually entails, make sure that you consider these talking points for the future.

Video games is one of the more important points to mention when it comes to the concept of new media. To say that this is vital would be an understatement, especially when you consider how designers have been playing games for years, in most cases. This is one of the most interactive forms of new media, too, which only makes it that much more important. Keep in mind, though, that this is just one example of new media to take into account.

Even though they seem to be utilized less and less these days, new media can also entail CDs. These physical devices, as compact as they are, have the potential to hold tremendous degrees of information. The space these discs can accumulate can help to store information, especially after computer back-ups, or they could be used to run different types of software. With the increased use of digital media via Internet, CDs must not be written off in the discussion of new media.

Another example of new media would be websites. These are some of the most informational platforms out there, which only makes the idea of web design that much more important. Not only are these websites needed for such educational endeavors, which goes without saying, but it's just as easy to see that various companies will require them for marketing. If you're going to discuss new media, it would be unwise to lead websites out of the discussion.

If you want to talk about new media, these are just a few of the most common examples to take into account. Artists are, more likely than not, going to have to use these tools in order to maximize efforts in their respective fields. While they may be used to directly create art, it's just as easy to assume that they will be used to store information instead. In any event, to simply write off new media, especially in this day and age, would be nothing short of a mistake.
