Why German Beer Is The Most Popular Beer

By Chris Carr

Throughout Germany consuming beer is a popular pastime. Germany has over 1,000 breweries which is many more than any other country in the world. Breweries of beer in Germany must follow the purity law, which originated in 1516 that dictated that only barley, hops and water must be used for brewing beer.

The brewers are obliged to follow the purity rules, which originated in 1516 that dictates they have to use certain ingredient in the brewing of the beer. Hops, barley malt and water are the fundamental ingredients used. This rule protects the consumer from poor standard and potentially lethal beverages. Over five hundred years ago the quality of the water was extremely poor so the people drank copious amounts of beer to quench their thirst. Over the years the quality of the beer has been refined to make it the most palatable quality beer that has a distinct taste and leaves little or no after taste.

Some of the styles of German ale include Koelsch, Weizen and Altbier. Lagers include Bock, Pilsener, Dunkel, Helles and Maerzen. The taste, colour and aroma vary from brew to brew but still are identified as good quality German Beer. The German beer Altbier is a brown style ale and is conditioned for longer than normal periods that allows it to mellows out the fruitiness and produces an exceptionally smooth and delicate brew. The colour ranges from medium to dark brown and has a great balance between malt and hops. Rauchbier is known to have smoky colour and flavour. These beers taste great and are very popular throughout the regions of Germany.

German lagers are also very popular not only in Germany but many other countries around the world. Pilsener is one of the most popular and most familiar of Germans Beer. It is a beer that presents with less malt and more hops and is very popular in particular in North America where it is served in bars and restaurants, as it happens to be one of the most popular dark lagers on the market.

Throughout Germany there are over 4,000 brands of beer. Some of the more popular and well known larger companies that produce German beer in the north of the country are Beck, St Pauli, Warstiener and Krombach, In the south of Germany there are many more breweries, however they are smaller and locally owned and operated. The Benedictine Abbey, one of the oldest brewers in the world is also in the south region of Germany. It was established in 1040, and run by Benedictine monks.

Germany is famous for its Oktoberfest, which is held every year in Munich. It starts in late September and carries on for two weeks, ending in early October. During Oktoberfest, lovers of beer travel from all over the world to Germany to celebrate German beers. There is dancing and singing as well as copious amounts of beer consumed during this time. Each and every year millions attend the event over the two week period, making it into the biggest celebrations in the world. Due to the success of Oktoberfest it is noted that many other countries now have their own version of Oktoberfest around that same period. However it is a fact that the Munich Oktoberfest is by far the best in the world.

Local brewers from Munich are the only ones allowed to present their beer in the bigger tents during the festival. There are only six breweries that are in attendance and they provide a variety of different beer for the public to consume. Attending this festival is a must on any bucket list of beer lovers. It allows you to sample the different varieties and enjoy the rich bold flavours of quality German Beer that is so popular.

Because of the success of Oktoberfest many other cities around the world try to mimic this festival, and hold their own versions around the same time as Germany.
