Starter's Guide To Write Captivating Books Effectively

By Cherry Mercer

For every budding writer, their greatest dream is perhaps to publish stories that are appealing to the readers. However, this can be quite a challenge with the wide diversity of readership. The interests and personalities may differ invariably. Not to mention the close competition among authors. Nonetheless, there are ways to at least keep up with the competition. That is, acquiring and honing the skills to write captivating books.

Your writing style matters a lot. An effective writing style can definitely captivate the audience. One way to keep their attention is to compel them to use their imaginations. Allow them to form a picture in their own minds. Instead of merely narrating what took place, describe the details to help them paint a mental image. Similar to a stroke in painting, the words you use can make a difference.

Maintain a good understanding of the location. This can enhance your story line, improve the reader's sense of memory and help them imagine better. Use every faculty of sense, so the audience can easily formulate the picture. Be specific on the time and place of the event. For instance, you can describe the snow-dusted pine cones, the fragrance of flowers and the evergreen branches to depict a cool summer rain or warm spring afternoon.

Do not undermine the effect of using high contrast. Whether the physical depiction, action and placement of your character or your word choice, describing two contrasting states can be appealing. This has a subconscious effect to the readers that would trigger them to reread the part that caught their attention.

Control the pacing of your story. As the story starts moving, things get more exciting. Make things even more electrifying by using a constantly increasing pace. Make your readers feel the excitement that can pump their heart with adrenaline. Gradually slow down the tempo after hitting a climax. Keep your story as close to the reality as it can get. Similar to real life events, things slow down a bit after a while.

Let your readers guess. One way to keep your readers hooked up is to interject a sense of mystery. This keeps them engrossed in flipping from pages to pages in an attempt to find out the answers in the end. This is one classic trick that never fails. This is an effective way to leave imprints to the readers, end a chapter or fuel plot lines.

Give the readers the opportunity to see themselves. A theme that can be related to humanity, life, survival, love and relationship is always more appealing to readers. Encourage your readers to see within themselves through the story. After all, literature is an expression of one's self. This has always been instrumental in discovering one's feelings, psyche and way of thinking.

Challenge an orthodox belief system. For some, this may be risky but it is one way to be remembered. The readers are likely to remember a story that made them think really deep. Present a different outlook of a known issue. This is normally used to challenge wrong concepts, correct misconceptions or just to inspire thinking and inquisitiveness.

Interject humor no matter how serious a story could get. The most captivating books in history has humors interposed in its pages. This is because the readers always look for something that could lighten things up. Humor can energize the readers, so they feel empowered. Effective use of comedy can bring relief to the readers amidst a rather serious storyline.
