A Guide To Competitive Shooting

By Rob Smith

There is a host of ways to define competitive shooting. Most importantly is that it is classified as a sporting event, with scores being based on accuracy and speed of the shooter. Guns or airguns can be used. Even hunting was included as an official event of the Olympic games in the year nineteen hundred, but never again after that. Crossbows can also be used in shooting competitions.

In eighteen seventy-one, the NRA, which stands for the National Rifle Association, was established in the USA. This followed the establishment of the association in Great Britain eleven years prior. The association's aim was to increase the number of skilled marksmen available for military purposes. Three years into the twentieth century, rifle clubs were being introduced throughout the nation, in colleges, military academies and universities. Games for this sport were called National Matches.

The Olympics have been home to a number of events over the years. The particulars of these events have been subject to change over time, however. Whereas in eighteen ninety six, the Olympics hosted five events of this nature, there were only three in the two thousand and four Olympic Games. These three were pistol, rifle and shotgun.

There are also 3-gun forms of competition, which use a mixture of different firearms throughout the stages of the competition. During a stage, a shooter will aim for target is various positions, changing firearms as necessary throughout. The type of target will determine the type of weapon that needs to be used.

Submachine gun competitions are increasing in popularity over the last 20 years. The equipment is a blend of a rifle and a handgun. It contains the properties of both, using the pistol's smaller cartridge. This event is probably the least known of all events because of the restrictions that come with using submachine guns.

Crossbow competitions fall into two categories: ten-meter match crossbow and thirty-meter match crossbow. The former takes place on a indoor range and shooters must shoot whilst standing. Thirty-meter match crossbow shooting, however, allows the competitor to shoot from either a standing or kneeling position. This competition also takes place on outdoor ranges that are enclosed.

Most people will very likely be familiar with one specific form of competitive shooting, in which the shooter uses a bow and arrows. This is a sport called archery. Archery is indeed the oldest form of competition on this kind.
