Aspects To Take Into Account When Selecting An Artist For Classical Portrait Painting

By Chloe Gib

Buying a painted image of oneself or ones family members is not something that's done every day. The final product will probably be in the possession of many generations to come so retaining the services of an excellent artist is crucial. Many claim to perform classical portrait painting but few are trained to properly fulfill the criteria of a truly brilliant creator.

The abundant technique used today is photorealism. This is different from realism in that photorealism is generally achieved through the mapping out and virtual tracing of a photograph. Realism draws and paints from life.

It involves creating rather than copying and the artist carefully selects the aspects he feels need to be included in order to create the most thorough likeness and most beautiful painting possible. There is an enormous difference between the two and the quality of the latter is inherently visible in the final product. Those who use realism are more capable of encapsulating the essence of a person's character.

Therefore, the most important thing to find out from a painter is whether he paints from life. It's perfectly appropriate to request samples of previous work. However, ask according to the task at hand. For example, if one is seeking an image of one's child, ask for samples of portrait paintings of children. It may be convenient to begin seeking artists near ones home. There are thousands everywhere. An internet search for Texas artists, for example, received two million results.

It's perfectly acceptable to request an on the spot, half an hour drawing of the subject to find out whether his style and talent are adequate for the task at hand. Those who are able to draw well in graphite will be able to paint well. Creating imagery in black and white is far more difficult as color covers a multitude of sins.

The human form is the most difficult thing to draw and paint. Classically trained artists focus on learning this art by painting from life and this is a rare talent in the current era. Few universities have this kind of training in their curriculum. One would do well to request academic qualification to find out whether his education included this kind of training.

It's not necessary to have an education in art to judge the standards of an artist. People are able to recognize good work whether they think they can or not. Everyone has an intuition they should trust when assessing the quality of classical portrait painting.
