Useful Information About Photo Restoration

By Thomas Murray

A lot of people will have boxes or books full of old family photographs in their homes. Over a period of time many of these pictures will have deteriorated or suffered damage due to bad storage or accidents. There are specialist firms who carry out photo restoration and can repair or restore your old snaps.

There are a couple of options open to you when you are searching for a company to carry out restoration work on your photographs. There are shops in many high streets who will offer this service. The other place to look is online and there are a lot of firms available who can do the work for you at a reasonable price.

When you have given your pictures to a company for restoration they will first asses the condition and decide whether they can be repaired. If they can then the company will give you a quotation for the work and wait for the go ahead. Pricing will depend on how much work has to be done and how many pictures you are submitting. Discounts are often available if you are sending a large number of photographs.

Many problems or faults can be fixed by the trained technicians that work for restoration companies and your pictures returned to as good as new. If a photo has faded in the sun it can be bought back to life and the colors restored and improved. Ripped photographs, creases and pit marks can also be invisibly repaired.

Other services offered by the restoration companies are color enhancements where black and white or sepia pictures can be colored. The company will use special computer software to add color to a picture whilst retaining the original detail. Your old pictures will remain as they were and will be sent back to you with the new copies.

When the restoration company has completed the restoration process they will send you proofs of the final pictures for your approval. If you are happy the new pictures will either be printed on photographic paper or digital copies can be purchased. It is advisable to get the digital copies as these can be stored away as back up. Most of the firms will keep copies of your images in case you wish to purchase extra copies in the future.

If you cannot scan and email your images and have to ship them it is important to make sure they are insured for the journey. The pictures should be carefully packaged to avoid any damage in transit. Any instructions you need to give to the companies regarding the work should be sent with the photos or emailed to them before they start restoring.

When you have received your restored prints they should be properly stored in photograph albums or boxes. They should always be kept out of direct sunlight and well away from any areas of moisture. If you only have digital copies then they should be copied onto another device and kept safe in case the original images are lost.
