Shows That Cover Drug Rehabs: Are They Worth Watching?

By Lonnie Coldbert

There are many drug and alcohol rehab shows today that may seem entertaining. However, do they help addicts to see the light and want to get help? A lot of rehab shows today involve a lot of planning and preparation. They often involve a professional interventionist that deals with addiction. Addiction today is at an all-time high. The use of cocaine, heroin and other types of drugs are being used in an ongoing basis. Many people today want to receive treatment and often cannot afford to do so.

Drug and alcohol rehab shows are often entertaining for the public. The reason why these shows get to stay on the air is because they provide a look into the world of drug addiction and alcoholism. Many addicts today say that they are troubled by the fact that they cannot stop taking a drug that they know is destroying their lives.

When we watch these types of shows on television, they give us a "bird's eye view" of this underworld. We get to see how an addict actually lives for their drug. Everything in their life becomes dependent on getting their hit every single day. Without it, they can go into convulsions or have severe trembling and heart palpitations. Many addicts cannot get sober on their own. Certain drugs like alcohol and heroin often require someone going to detox before treatment. This is so that they can get the drug out of their system safely.

Detoxing from drugs today is often easier than it was 25 years ago. Modern day technology allows the drugs to be taken out of the body safely. There are psychiatrists involved in this process and treatment specialists. In rehab, people are given group therapies and holistic services to help them to get back into everyday life and society.

If you are like me, you like to see people succeeding. Reality shows help us to see that success is possible. It actually encourages families to see that hope is right around the corner. No longer does your family member have to suffer. In today's world, there is help right around the corner. Most people watch these shows if they are suffering from an addiction themselves or know someone that is. It can be a good educational tool if you simply don't know what to do. In one episode, I saw a man getting help that nobody thought could have gotten assistance. However, he ended up going into rehab and improve his life after he got out of treatment.
