Instrumental Piano Cover Of Black Widow

By Luke Davis

The new big hit song these days is the gritty "Black Widow" by Rita Ora and Iggy Azalea. Along with the sinister lyrics; the powerful tune and mysterious harmonies give the song edge and grit. It would surely be a challenge for any individual to even try to beautify this song.

You really can't play rap music on piano, so there is the difficulty of playing Iggy Azalea's part. Furthermore, it just seems like it would be too edgy to work as a piano instrumental. Nevertheless, even this song can be transformed into a piano instrumental.

The rap part of Iggy Azalea could be overcome by simply improvising over the synth background riff. And the mysterious chords truly sound good in the lower keys of the piano. There is a lot of space between the phrases on Rita Ora's part which makes it easy to play it as a piano instrumental. The background riff could be played in between the melody line.

There are various things you could try for the accompaniment. You can follow up a booming bass note with a softer mid range configuration, jump bass could work well. To acquire a soft yet mystical sound you can arpeggiate the harmonies. Other than playing block chords, following the bass drum rhythm for the pattern can also create thicker texture.

For various intensity levels, it could be great if you combine different styles. Playing just solitary notes for the introduction could work. Then for the verse you can add a harmony note with the right hand to be able to pick up the energy a notch. In order to bring the huge chorus effect, you can play in octaves or full chords for the refrain.

Even if it might seem weird, the song "Black Widow" can still sound good even if you play it on piano...now that's a 'rap'.
