James Weldon Johnson was the infamous composer of this song. He was a scholar from Clark-Atlanta University who had been working as the principal in one of the major public schools in the town of Jacksonville, Florida. Stanton School, later known as the Stanton College Preparatory School. 5 years after the composition of this song, the author's brother John Rosamond Johnson, who is also a composer, gave music to the writing and turned it into a song which was later known as the official black national anthem. James Johnson, the author of this song was born six years after the termination of the Civil War, in the year 1971. His father was hired as the head waiter in a upscale hotels of Jacksonville whereas his mother was a learned public school teachers who emphasized moral education and the worth of formal education. His brother was a music composer.
