By Claudine MacDonald

Turbans may be said to be a piece of clothing worn by people from different regions around the world. The Islamic turban is the one that is worn by the people professing the Islamic faith. Prophet Mohammed is credited with having worn the original turbans which were of black color and another of white color.

It is actually a piece of cloth that is tied around the heads that it is firmly in place. The cloth is cut to a certain length and width; tying the hat requires specific skills. The material and color of cloth is varied and depends on the choice of the user, who ail tie in according to his fancy. It may be indicative of a tribe or religion that the person belongs to .

Turbans was the name given to the headgear worn by the women in most western countries. It is less prevalent now than it was in the beginning of the century. These had a foundation that would form the base for the turbans. These caps were sewn on to it and so one could wear it easily and also remove it very easily. This means they need not be tied and untied every time the wearer needs to put it on.

There is the Asian kind of turbans that has to be tied on every time one wants to wear it. A checkered type of scarf is preferred by those in parts of Arabian Peninsula. It has the name keffiyeh. Though it is not a turban strictly speaking, it is the type of clothing that is liked in the region. Turbans will mean a different thing and have a different connotation in different places according to that customs of a given people.

A headgear lends color and pomp to any occasion and the individuals in the eastern counties especially in the Arabian and the Asian regions were well known for their spectacular headgear. Primarily the people use the headgear to get shelter from the elements particularly the dust and the sun. They also help the people to identify with their culture and traditions.

There is a lot of variation in the significance of turbans for people from different regions. The names given to the head covers are also named in a different manner. Mainly all the citizens of one sect will have a common name for it. The people are particular to come out on festivals in their multicolored robes and turbans so that they may take part in the festive celebrations.

Fashion and cloth wear serve two purposes, one to keep us up with the contemporary traditions and the other to give protection as do all our other clothing. In this manner the hat gives a lot of protection to the head and keep the person free from the flying dust. They also lend a touch of glamor to the wearer with their color and style.

Sunnah Mu'akkadah or confirmed tradition is the name that is given to an Islamic turban. People wear these to show their devotion and commitment to religion and not for the style statement. This kind of attire is representative of the nature and identity of the wearer. It is true for almost all kinds of traditional wear.
