Scott Tucker Talks about the Spa-Francorchamps

By Jim Tobin

Another round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup series brought the Scott Tucker-owned Level 5 Motorsports squad to Belgium for the Spa-Francorchamps 2011 race. The popular course is acknowledged for being flat yet still giving motorists with complicated curves to discover while racing at swifter speeds compared to some other tracks.

Tucker with his fantastic squad, coming off wins at the 12 Hours of Sebring along with the Long Beach Street Circuit, were enthusiastic to be at the location and discover precisely what the weekend had to bring. The Spa competition was packed and serious; the Le Mans series and the Intercontinental Le Mans series draw in prime talent from worldwide to the legendary Spa track. "This is one of the greatest tracks in the world," Tucker explained. "It's one of the faster tracks we run at. It's curvy but flat ... you're flat to the floor."Within the runs at the ILMS year opener in the 12 Hours of Sebring, the Lola Honda had trouble in making top speed at the straightaways. For the Spa, all Honda vehicles were given a 1.2 mm larger air restrictor as compensation. After 1st testing, explained Level 5 driver Christophe Bouchut, the restrictor granted minor increases in speed, but it was unknown pre-race simply how much of a change the adjustment will make.

As it ended up, the restrictor didn't offer the speed raise the Level 5 team had estimated, a disappointing result that set the team in a minor disadvantage, even though it wasn't through yet. In qualifying rounds, driven by Bouchut, the Honda completed 10th-not the end result you could possibly expect due to the fast track, the driver talent and the restrictor change.

After he'd run the course, Tucker told members of the media his impression of the course: "It's as advertised: long and fast," he stated. "In the prototype, the turns are so fast, and there are a lot of G's, so it will be very physically challenging over 6 hours."

But Six hours didn't really come as Tucker plus the team estimated. With a bit of contact with a car speculated to be No. 41, the Level 5 vehicle came into pit for fuel with destruction within the right rear end corner on the tail section. The area was replaced, and after fueling up, the car was back on track.

Afterward, a few hrs into the race, Bouchut instantly spun into the barrels along the side of the track. Team manager David Stone believed that something in the rear suspension had failed, but the power team must wait formal inspection for the answer.

Though Level 5 Motorsports endured a disheartening conclusion to its second ILMC appearance, driver enthusiasm and talent were not at issue. Just days away from another FC race in California, the group changed its attention toward its next opportunity.
