I Loved Participating in a Christmas Play

By Yvonne Brixey

The Christmas season comes with a lot of fun-filled traditions, and one f the most popular traditions for many families and communities is the Christmas play. There is just something about plays, particularly Christmas plays, that can somehow set the mood for the entire season. Everyone enjoys an annual visit to see the local Christmas play.

When I was in high school, I spent a lot of time on and around the set when the annual Christmas play was being prepared. Let me tell you, a Christmas play can be a lot of work. There is the delegation of parts for cast members and the memorization of script lines. Not to mention the set up of the interior set, along with a simple exterior set. A lot of time and energy goes into putting on a play, especially a Christmas play. But it is always worth it in the end.

When I was participating in my school's Christmas play, I got very lucky and ended up with a talented and flexible director, who in turn selected a talented and flexible cast. We, as a cast, spent a lot of time working on lines and plays with movement so that when the interior set was ready, we would also be ready to practice for our Christmas play performance.

During our down time, many cast members of that Christmas play spent a lot of time visiting with the set members and watched (and sometimes even helped) with the creation of the interior set and the simple exterior set. The attention to detail for such Christmas play set such as this was stunning. Not a paintbrush hair was out of place as the cast members painstakingly painted scene after scene after scene. This would definitely be a Christmas play to remember.

As the Christmas play drew closer, we were grateful our director had chosen such a flexible cast. We began spending five or sometimes even six days out of the week practicing and rehearsing and making certain that all the seconds and minutes were going exactly according to script. I'm sure we went over the movements and lines for that Christmas play over a thousand times that season. But we all developed a deep love for the play and a close friendship with the other cast and set members.

Have you ever participated in a play, be it a Christmas play or not, before? If you have never participated in a play, then you cannot fathom the feelings we as a cast felt that opening night. Watching the people buying their tickets and filing into the theater was almost surreal! They are coming to watch a Christmas play. They were coming to watch OUR Christmas play. A combination of jitters and butterflies hopped about in each cast and set member's stomach that night.

And our Christmas play went off without a hitch! Each flexible cast member said their lines perfectly. Both the interior set and the exterior set were superb and set the mood for the whole evening. The audience was in awe, and as the final cast member in the Christmas play said his final line, the audience gave us a standing ovation! They loved it! Words cannot describe the joy we felt that night, or the nights following, as we performed our Christmas play.I Loved Participating in a Great Christmas Play
