Choosing Acoustic Guitar Strings

By Brendan Clougherty

Getting the perfect sound from an acoustic guitar is a mix of tools, creativity, strategy and practice. Deciding upon ideal strings is vital to the entire effort and time invested is rewarded by sound excellence. There are essential aspects to be taken into account in choosing strings for an acoustic guitar, each is important in selecting the best string. The factors are: cost, string type, string gauge, required tone, and guitar's age. The comprehension of these factors will give you useful information and instill confidence in the player when deciding which acoustic guitar string to buy.

Value. A basic but fundamental factor to consider when buying strings for an acoustic guitar. Having to pay greater than is required for the ideal strings can be avoided by doing a quick research. Experienced guitar players, a reputable music shop and the Internet are are a few of the resources to be mined to secure the hottest deal out there.

Type of String. For beginners, nylon strings are highly recommended. This is because nylons are gentler and provide less strain for the fingers. If the player is playing classical guitar, keep on using nylon strings. For folk players, ball end nylon strings are recommended. Such strings are heavier than normal nylon and are generally conducive to a strumming style of playing.

String Gauge. The gauge of a string pertains to its diameter. For the acoustic guitar there are 4 major gauge alternatives. * Extra light (10 - 46). Best to play with and least tension. Great for starters but susceptible to making a thin sound. * Custom Light Gauge (11 - 52). Simplicity of playing preserved and creates marginally richer and fuller sound. * 12 - 54 Light Gauge. Popular with the majority of expert music artists. Higher tuning stability. Not recommended for budget acoustic guitar due to higher tension. * Medium Gauge (13 - 56). One of the highest gauges. Very big, rich tone although difficult to play on some acoustic guitars caused by high pressure.

Required tone. Players may seek a certain tone of the guitar. Even though a not so objective feeling there are basic attributes to specific strings. * Bronze String Type - Clear and vivid tone but tendency to fade. * Phosphor Bronze String Type - Warm tone with a tendency to sustain longer. * Coated String Type - Rich tone with extended retention and life.

Age of Guitar. A new acoustic guitar is usually sturdy enough to allow the player the choice of a variety of strings. If the player has a vintage instrument more care must be taken. Older instruments were created to be strung with gut string and call for a very light gauge.

Selecting proper guitar strings will help strategy, increase quality and improve the guitar player's confidence. Time invested in this aspect of guitar preservation adds enjoyment for both guitarist and listener.
