Maybe You've Considered West Coast Swing

By Gloria Steffens

West coast swing has its roots in dance styles from New York dance halls which started this dance in the 1920s. This dance style and jazz music were the beginning of a whole new way to listen to music and express one's athletic ability on the dance floor. The dance were soon becoming popular throughout the country and is still very popular today in the twenty first century.

In the early years of this dance style band leaders were noticing that people loved to come out to dance floor whenever they played music with the right beat to support this dance craze. So the band leaders encouraged the song writers to write music that would bring out the swingers in droves. At first swing was not appreciated by the professional dance associations.

West coast style originated from the teaching routines of the traditional dance style by instructors who realized the beginners had a hard time learning the traditional moves. The new form was easier for students to learn and put into practice. Today the easier form of dancing is one of the most popular dance forms in the country.

Many people like to dress up in period clothing such as baggy pants and flowing skirts. This type of attire allows free movement for the athletic moves that this dance requires. Plus wearing period clothes is simply plain fun for many dancers who want to have the complete dance experience.

Many changes have taken place as far as dance clothes are concerned because ballroom dancers have accepted swinging. The swinging contestants can be seen wearing long evening dresses and formal tuxedos while doing their dance routine. But on a Saturday night at the local dance hall dance enthusiasts can be seen wearing period clothes from the thirties and forties.

Flowing skirts and baggy pants can still be seen on many dance floors where dance enthusiasts move to the beat. Dressing for this dance is as much fun as dancing itself for many die hard dancers. Watching theses skilled dancers is like going back in time to the thirties and forties when this dance was king.

West coast swing is based on dancing styles that grew out of the New York dance scene in the 1920's. This type of dancing is as popular today as it was back then. Some people love to dress up in period clothing of the thirties and forties in order to experience the complete dance experience. Many people are signing up for dance lessons because they too want to join the fun.
