An Introduction to Typography Design

By James Goldstein

One of the courses you should take at the graphic design university is typography. This is the technique used to arrange and modify different styles of type and type glyphs to be used in many different applications. You should learn how to do this by hand, even though most of it is done by interactive computer software. By learning to do it manually first, you get a better knowledge of how it works.

It is important that type face design be legible. If it isn't created in a way that the letters and words can easily be discerned, then it becomes useless. People want to be able to look at something quickly and understand exactly what it says. If the letters aren't clear, spaced correctly and match with each other, it makes the document or image hard to read.

Typography, type set should also be readable. The words need to be spelled correctly, the punctuation correct, the sequence of the words correct, and the paragraphs in correct order for the piece to be understandable. Just as in being legible, if it is not readable, the meaning can be distorted and the wrong ideas drawn from that. Being concise and direct is the best way to get a message, meaning or idea across.

Display typography is a newer style of type facing. It is using the type in an artistic way different from the standard. The designer will take the negative space and use it to combine words, text and pictures along with graphics and images that will show a relationship between all the elements.

Posters, digital billboards, labeling, logos, calligraphy, graffiti, architectural lettering and inscriptional messages are use some type of typography. You can see examples that use this method of wording and explanation anywhere you go, and in any media you observe. This kind of use is evident over the internet especially, where programs allow you to interface all of these elements together.

Experimental typography was first used by David Carson. In this method, the main idea is get the message across through the use of some kind of emotion. This type of typography is more concerned with the actual relation of the message than the correct or concise use of the words and letters. This is another subject that will be covered at the graphic design college.
