Valuing Original Sculpture Art As Investments

By Michael Brown

When most people talk about investments, they would immediately think of stocks, bonds, or equities. However, most do not know that sculptures are also some form of alternative investment. Here are some things to know about original sculpture art as a form of alternative investment in this age.

Take note that while the art market is still pretty young, it is one of the markets that is growing rather rapidly. Sculptures specifically, have a demand that is almost as high as paintings in some countries. In fact, it is quite common to see galleries showcasing tons of sculptures for onlookers to scout.

Of course, investment practices will be a little bit different with regard to art. First of all, most art collectors would go with their feelings first when looking at sculptures rather than with their brain. In a way, it would be like buying a business and seeing if it resonates value.

After one has felt the sculptures and chosen a particular one, the next thing to do would be to appraise it. It is important to check for the authenticity of a piece of work supplemented by a certificate of authenticity in order to know the real value. Copies do have value but authentic art has more value.

After checking the value of the artwork, the next thing to check would be the demand of the artwork. Even though sculptures do have a really good resale value potential, not all sculptures can be sold. If there is no demand for that artwork, then one will just get stuck with it at home.

In order to know the demand of a sculpture, one has to check how many times it has been resold. One will be able to know the history of a sculpture through working with the gallery to trace it back. There would also usually be some receipts that go along with the sales of sculptures so one can ask for that too.

If it is a new work of art and it has not been resold yet, then one should use the other works of the artist as a basis to check the demand. One can ask the gallery owner if ever the other works have been resold many times and exactly how many times have the most popular works of art been resold. That will allow one to grasp just how well the sculptures are moving and if his or her one will be a good candidate to move as fast.

For those whoa are interested in investing in sculptures, these are some things to take note of. Of course, art investments are rather difficult to do because there is a lack of information in the art market as compared to the forex and stock market which happens to be full of information. That is why it is important for one to initially just use his or her gut feel when discerning whether a piece of art has value or not.
