How To Start Working In Voiceover Services

By George Wood

Actors come in a wide variety of forms such as those performing on stage, on television, in film, as characters at amusement parks or events, and much much more. There are some individuals who make their living as an actor without being seen. These artists offer voiceover services and are utilized in more ways than most people even realize.

These artists use the power of their voices to breathe life into characters or stories. They are used for such purposes as cartoons and animated films; advertisements for television, movie trailers, radio, and internet; even video games and loudspeaker announcements. There are endless possibilities for how the talents of this type of actors might be utilized.

There is ample work to be had in this genre, but getting one's foot in the door as a vocal artist can take a bit of hard work. Simply speaking or singing into the mic will not be enough. These types of performers also have the challenge of being as skilled at those actors who do physical performances, but use only their voice to engage the audience.

The first thing most people do while starting out on their journey to become a vocal artist is find a highly rated instructor to take vocal lessons. Even when one is satisfied with their sound, training in techniques for controlling pitch, breathing, and tone, can help increase the flow when needing to carry out a long dialog. There are plenty of tricks used in this trade and coaching can be highly effective at learning them all.

Sometimes the vocal artist will be called to fulfill particular requests for a job. This included circumstances such as giving the role a signature sound, selling a scene through good emoting, or utilizing specific accents on one or multiple characters. Proper coaching helps improve these essential skills.

After some training, the next step would be to go to a studio and have a professional demo tape made. These are left at every audition and mailed to advertising and casting companies in introduction packages, throughout their target region. Agents will utilize these to help decide who to cast for a role or to call back.

The competition in the field is quite stiff, so it is important that actors continue to work on their talents, update their dossier, and be diligent on submitting their introduction packages. It also does not hurt to occasionally call everyone who was sent a package just to touch base and keep their name fresh on the list. Being flexible and capable of adapting to the demands of the current culture, will be a valuable advantage.

Working in the industry as a vocal artist can be very versatile and a lot of fun, but it does take more than a great voice. Continued training and coaching are necessary for keeping talents sharp and always improving. Some things that all aspiring actors of this sort need to keep in mind is to be diligent, never give up, and make sure to follow up on submissions.
