A Brief Look At Native American Oil Paintings NM And Their Meaning

By Michael Butler

Native Americans have been creating paints and sculptures for centuries. This is one of the first civilizations in America and thus their culture is rich in history and art. One of their most popular forms of expression is sculpture. Over the years there have been countless Native American oil paintings NM and sculptures uncovered by Archeologists.

Although there are a wide variety of different sculptures the most common are known as Fetishes. They were miniaturized carvings of animals that were believed to contain the essence of the being that it was carved to look like. Common animals that were chosen for these carvings include eagles, rabbits, wild horses, or bears. These small statues were highly revered by the Native American people. As a result, great care was taken when making and decorating them.

These small animals were sculpted with the idea that they needed to b attractive while still serving a purpose to the person who carried them. The sculptures would be meticulously decorated with small stones, feathers, shells, and anything from nature that was beautiful. However, some Fetish sculptures were more highly decorated than others. These sculptures would be adorned in precious metals or even gemstones that the artist would specially choose.

Continuing the tradition of using what was available to them, the artists who carved these little sculptures would use the stone around them. There are many examples of Fetish sculptures that have been carved from the soapstone or turquoise. The experts consider Fetish sculptures carved from marble to be the most difficult to find. This could be because marble at the time was a scarce and expensive commodity.

Although several Native tribes created these Fetish carvings the Zuni tribe created the most prolific sculptures. This tribe believed that their sculptures were real animals that had been turned to the sun by their sun god. Therefore, these little carvings held immense power and were treated with great respect. These people believed that their sculptures were the physical connection between earth and the spirit world.

One of the most unique characteristics of the Zuni tribe was their belief that each direction of the compass was represented by a different animal. The mountain lion represented the North, the East was represented by the wolf, the badger represented the South, and West was represented by the bear. Each one of these animals had a property that would benefit the person who carried their Fetish. Certain sculptures helped to keep danger away on a long journey while others helped to keep you healthy.

There are a wide variety of Native American sculptures other than the Fetish Carvings. Busts shaped from clay or wood were also common. Each one of these sculptures represents an important historical figure from their history. Additionally, totem poles were often crafted by carving figures out of tree trunks. The totem poles were sculpted to indicate a welcome place for guests while indicating the status and ties in a village or home.

The sculptures created by Americans are a key part of their history. Their sculptures are not only breathtaking to look at but also serve to connect their people to the spirit world.
