How To Avoid Common Mistakes When Hanging Contemporary Art Displays

By Henry Brooks

You don't have to own an art gallery to enjoy beautiful artwork. Displaying pieces in the privacy of your home can be a great way to decorate rooms with the things you love. If you are a professional designer, you will probably avoid the pitfalls that plague many amateurs, but even amateurs can take some simple steps to ensure their contemporary art displays are effective and pleasurable.

Nine times out of ten, if a person is going to make a mistake hanging artwork, it will be putting it too high on the wall. Once a piece is above eye level, the viewer gets the sensation that the artwork is actually floating. If you are guilty of hanging pieces too high, try taking them down with a friend and, while one determines the optimal height, the other one can hang.

Another common mistake, often seen in homes, is artwork that doesn't fit the space. It may be big or too small, but either way it isn't right and gives the whole room an unbalanced feel. Enlarging the frame and matte sometimes works. Other times you can create a collage with several works to fill a larger space.

Just because you can afford to have matching furnishings, doesn't mean it is the best idea. If your artwork matches your furniture, rugs, and pillows, it won't have the impact you want it to have. The bolder and more colorful your wall art, the simpler and more neutral your furnishings and accent pieces should be.

Wallpapering your walls with artwork isn't a good idea either. With too many pieces, viewers' eyes get confused and don't know where to focus. If you have invested in nice artwork, you want people to be able to enjoy it. It needs room to stand on its own. Walls over filled with art tend to end up looking like a store with cheap prints for sale.

It's great to have a preference for certain periods and artists, but you should try to mix them up a bit to keep your walls interesting. Everything can start to look the same, if you aren't careful. Guests won't get the full effect or really enjoy your pieces if none of them stand out from the other.

Sometimes when people attempt collages, the result looks like the pieces were just thrown on the wall, and they stuck there. If you are going to create a good collage, you have to have a plan. You can draw it first, or place the pieces on the floor and arrange and rearrange them until you are satisfied. Only then is it time to hang.

If you love art and enjoy having it in your home, there are simple things you can do to create a beautiful space. It may take some time and the opinion of others but you can manage it without a professional designer. Once you are satisfied, you will definitely enjoy the results.
