The Importance Of Geometric Artwork

By Robert Walker

Although geometric patterns are examples of Islamic decorations, they play an important part in the religion. It is important comprehend that in such kind of decorations figurative images are not used. The use of patterns commenced hundreds of years ago. Patterns involve the combination of repeated circles and squares. Geometric artwork is mainly associated with Islamic architecture and also the art. They are made in places like kilim carpets, woodwork, ceramics, metalwork and stainless glass.

Islamic art does involve figurative images. This is intended to ensure, they do not become items of worship. Most of the patterns originated from Sasanian, Roman and Greek. Apart from geometric patterns, other examples of Islamic decorations are arabesque that involves branching and curving, and also Islamic calligraphy. 8-pointed star is a common pattern that is mainly made of 2 squares where one is rotated up to 45 degrees. The other type of shape is called polygon and it includes octagons and pentagons. All the aforementioned forms are combined to form many and different patterns. They are mainly drawn with the help of a ruler and a compass.

Plates and bowls associated with Islamic religion are mainly decorated both in the interior and the exterior with the help of radial stripes. Such structures tend to represent either the flower petals or the stylized leaves. Circular bands run around the jug and the bowl. Nowadays, many designers are using styles, shapes and patterns for purposes such as vector art and logo designs.

According to Islamic religion, Islamic art is sacred. It is usually made purposely for religious and spiritual devotion and expression. The art is not intended to express or tell personal story or message of an artist. It expresses the teachings of Islam through calligraphy and also miniature painting. Most importantly, it helps greatly in one way or another in the worship.

It is true that artists make a variety of patterns. Many seem to be very different from the others but if looked carefully they have a certain similarity. In other words, they have a similar idea regarding symmetry, harmony and structure. Artists follow rules that have been put in place when it comes to Islamic art. This ensures the intended information is passed appropriately.

Geometry is actually the foundation of Islamic art. A lot of important information is conveyed through it. When it comes to calligraphy, artists are required to be careful in matters concerning geometric measurements. They are expected to be very accurate. Making a slight mistake may end up distorting the intended message. This art does not only have an outer meaning, but also an inner one.

As a member of the Muslim religion, consider applying appropriate effort so as to learn and understand both the inner and outer message conveyed by the art. Artists normally use natural materials when making these kinds of patterns. Most get into their dreams with the help of natural pigments. They dislike using readymade paints because of high percentage of unnatural chemicals present in them.

Every Islamic artist in New York has the duty of inspiring and educating people around him or her. Artists should work hard to ensure people around them abide by the traditions of Islam, which require them not only to respect, but also to love the Islamic art. They are expected to use their talent to show the beauty of the religion.
