Learning And Enjoying Bharatanatyam Classes

By Pamela Hardy

There are a wide range of people who are interested in taking Bharatanatyam classes Los Angeles. Some of them find the challenge exciting. Others enjoy experiencing something they share with their ancestors from South India. Still other people find it an entertaining method of keeping fit or making art.

Most dancers these days are women, although there is the occasional man. The dance comes from Tamil Nadu, a south Indian state, and is quite ancient, dating back to at least 1000 B. C. E. The basic sequences of movement are called adavus, and these are put together in a number of different ways to tell a story. Adavus are sometimes compared to an alphabet.

Beginning dancers learn ten adavus that make up the majority of the necessary moves for the more complex dance. The dance itself follows a sequence in which each part has a meaning. Depending on the dance studio, there are 108-150 adavus that can be learned, but even professional dancers usually only up around 60. As well as the movements of the body, Bharata Natyam includes many complex eye and hand movements.

Adavus are put together in certain sequences to form jathis, which themselves are combined in different ways to tell the tale of the dance. Dances are made up of at least six elements out of a possible twelve. Some of the dances are prayers, and other tell stories or show off proficiency in the dance.

The music that dancers use is done on traditional instruments in the Carnatic style. Dancers wear costumes, although what these are has changed in many ways during the life of the dance. Jewelery and ankle bells are worn while performing, as well. When the dances call for sung or spoken words, the dancers use Tamil, Telugu or Kannada as the languages of choice.

Various things draw people to bharatanatyam classes los angeles. Some people enjoy the exercise as a personally challenging method of dance. Others enjoy feeling connected with their roots. Some people practice to get better, either for the accomplishment of it or to perform somewhere. The dance can fill many needs for many different people.
