What To Expect When You Own A Chesapeake Bay Retriever

By Donny Helander

Have you ever heard of a dog breed known as the Chesapeake Bay Retriever? Many people have not. It's origins are hard to track as well. Some suggest that it is a retriever that has been bred with coon hounds, while other legends suggest an English water poodle. Regardless, the one thing that all stories about this dog breed share is the fact that it is a great water dog that is excellent for hunting any sort of bird game.

If you are going hunting in tough weather conditions and need a hunting dog, you'll never find better. This is due to several of its natural attributes. For starters, it has a great short term memory and is quite intelligent. It can track a good number of birds and remember locations.

It also will go into the water, even very cold water, without hesitation. This breed enjoys the water. It's enthusiasm for water of any temperature sets it apart even among retriever breeds.

A third bonus to this breed is its exceptionally thick coat. This helps keep it both warm and dry even in horrible conditions.

Lastly, it's stamina is exceptional. These dogs are tireless bird dogs. They could literally run all day long. If you add all the benefits up, you should be unsurprised at how popular this breed is with hunters.

There are some drawbacks to the breed however. For starters, it's not the easygoing friendly dog that you will get with a golden retriever or a Labrador retriever.

You don't want to pick this dog for a family pet, for instance. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers aren't as affectionate as other retrievers, and are inclined to fight besides.

As a bird dog, though, you'll find no equal to the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, especially if you plan on hunting in cold weather. They are excellent at all of the tasks you need in a bird dog.
